*GATHERING PRAYER (in unison)

Gracious God, the journey is long and the cross is heavy.  We come today to this place of worship tired—tired of responsibility, tired of turning the other cheek, tired of trying to return good for evil.  We wish someone else would carry our burdens for us.  We long for an oasis in our wilderness.   In the quietness of these few moments, help us to turn our eyes upon One Who has taken the responsibility, Who has turned the other cheek, Who has returned good for evil, and Who has promised to bear our burdens.  Enable us to enjoy our lightened load, to continue our Lenten journey, and to find the oasis of your love. We pray together as Jesus taught us, saying: “Our Father…”

*LORD’S PRAYER (using “debts”)

CHILDREN’S STORY       “Be Careful!”

Help Me      By Eric Kilburn

Hold my hand, hold me steady,

Calm my nerves as I make ready.

Give me laughter in the face of fear,

Give me dancing over my despair.

Give me vision when my strength is gone,

Give me one more candle before dawn.

It Causes Us to Hurt Ourselves

John Henry Faulk tells the story of his early childhood, growing up with his cousin, Billy, deep in East Texas.  John Henry said that as nine-year-old make-believe Texas Rangers, they were the scourge of all bandits, robbers and desperadoes when they rode their trusty stick horses on the range between the kitchen door and the corncrib.

One day John Henry’s mother sent them out to investigate a commotion in the henhouse.  They cautiously entered where all the chickens were squawking and fluttering around and began to examine the nests.  About half way through their investigation, as they peered into a nest, a black snake raised its head about six inches from their noses.  John Henry remembers how all of their make-believe heroism fell away as they made a new door in the side of the henhouse.

When John Henry’s mother questioned them about the incident, she wondered how the two bravest lawmen in East Texas could be afraid of a harmless black snake, adding, “After all, everybody knows that a black snake can’t hurt nobody.”  To which young Billy replied, as he rubbed his bruised head and backside, “Yes, Ma’am, but they sure can cause you to hurt yourself.”

Master story-teller, Donald Shelby, who relates this narrative, goes on to say that “Billy is absolutely right and that is why fear itself is frightening.  John Steinbeck saw it and wrote, ‘A person afraid is a dangerous animal.’  And Robert Frost put it this way: ‘The people I am most afraid of are the people who are scared.’  Why?  Because fear causes us not only to hurt ourselves, but to hurt each other in unwitting, senseless and often destructive ways.”

Whiter Than Snow

“Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;

wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.”  Psalm 51:7

Whiter than snow sounds like an impossibility, and yet the psalmist likens his spiritual purification as a result of God’s washing as being even whiter than snow.  When companies advertising their detergents want to use the ultimate comparison, they use the word snow.  So, you can buy Ivory Snow, or any one of a number of products with the word snow in its name or description.  To those of us who live the snow belt, there is nothing that looks so lovely and so white as a newly fallen snow.  Yet, if you take a pan full of that snow and melt it down, you will find that there are impurities in it that were hidden by the glare of its whiteness.  Thus the necessity for being even whiter than snow, if we are to have a righteousness which is acceptable to God.  Thank God, we have this in the righteousness of Jesus Christ, which is ours when we are washed in the blood of the Son of God.

There are two words in the Hebrew language that are used to indicate the different kinds of washing.  One of them is a word which signifies the kind of washing which penetrates completely the thing washed, and cleanses it through and through.  The other word is a word which means to wash the surface of an object without penetrating the object itself.  Both these words are used very specifically and carefully in the scriptures to indicate the type of washing meant.  The psalmist here uses the first word which means a thorough cleansing rather than just a surface cleansing.  The next time you see a freshly fallen snow, let your heart rejoice that God, in Christ Jesus, has made you whiter than snow.

End of Life Series

Plan to attend any or all of the sessions in the End-of-Life series that is sponsored by the Board of Christian Education.  Each session will begin with a video (check out “On Our Own Terms” on the web) followed by discussion.  There will be lots of information about planning for end of life directives, living wills, funerals, etc.—our Christian faith makes a difference as we think about these issues and talk with our families.  The sessions will be every other Sunday afternoon from 3-5PM, beginning today.  Today’s topic is “Living With Dying”.  For more information, speak with Pastor Carol.  Child care will be available—please notify the church office if you are coming and need care for your children.
