Word of the Week: “Original Sin”

For generations, the Christian Church espoused the doctrine of “original sin” claiming that every human being since Adam and Eve carried the sins of all time from the time they were born.  But Jesus came to bring God’s forgiveness and unconditional love—in God’s grace, we are born with an “original blessing” and must live in such a way to preserve that blessing

CHORAL INTROIT

RESPONSIVE CALL TO WORSHIP

L:   In this season, we worship remembering Jesus’ death in love for us and all people.

P:   Lent is a time for tears.

L:   But out of tears, joy is born-- the joy of sin forgiven, hope reborn and life restored.

All: We stand in awe of the God who brings joy out of tears, hope out of trials, and life out of death.

*OPENING HYMN   “Dear God, Embracing Humankind” (v. 1, 2, 5)                               Hymnal #594

*GATHERING PRAYER (in unison)

O God, you know us through and through—you know the many choices we face each day.  We have to choose between right and wrong; we choose between greater and lesser evils; we choose what will be important to us in life.  As you strengthened Jesus to choose rightly when He was tempted in the wilderness, so strengthen us, through your presence and Spirit, when we are facing temptation, that we may walk in the paths most pleasing to you.  And may we walk in your grace through all the ways and days of our lives.  We pray as Jesus taught us, saying: “Our Father…”

*LORD’S PRAYER (using “debts”)

Don’t Ignore the Volcano

Scores of people lost their lives.  The world’s mightiest army was forced to abandon a strategic base.  Property damage approached a billion dollars. All because the sleeping giant, Mount Pinatube in the Philippines roared back to life after 600 years of quiet slumber.

When asked to account for the incredible destruction caused by this volcano, a research scientist from the Philippine department of volcanology observed, “When a volcano is silent for many years, our people forget that it’s a volcano and begin to treat it like a mountain.”

Like Mount Pinatube, our sinful nature always has the potential to erupt, bringing great harm both to ourselves and to others.  The biggest mistake we can make is to ignore the volcano and move back onto what seems like a dormant “mountain”.

Making Pancakes for God

Six-year-old Brandon decided one Saturday morning to fix his parents pancakes.  He found a big bowl and spoon, pulled a chair to the counter, opened the cupboard and pulled out the heavy flour canister, spilling it on the floor.  He scooped some of the flour into the bowl with his hands, mixed in most of a cup of milk and added some sugar, leaving a floury trail on the floor which by now had a few tracks left by his kitten.

Brandon was covered with flour and getting frustrated.  He wanted this to be something very good for Mom and Dad, but it was getting very bad.  He didn’t know what to do next, whether to put it all into the oven or on the stove and he didn’t know how the stove worked!

Suddenly he saw his kitten licking from the bowl of mix and reached to push her away, knocking the egg carton to the floor.  Frantically he tried to clean up this monumental mess but slipped on the eggs, getting his pajamas white and sticky.

And just then he saw Dad standing at the door.  Big crocodile tears welled up in Brandon’s eyes.  All he’d wanted to do was something good, but he’d made a terrible mess.  He was sure a scolding was coming, maybe even a spanking.  But his father just watched him.

Then, walking through the mess, he picked up his crying son, hugged him and loved him, getting his own pajamas white and sticky in the process!

That’s how God deals with us. We try to do something good in life, but it turns into a mess.

Our marriage gets all sticky, or we insult a friend, or we can’t stand our job, or our health goes sour.  Sometimes we just stand there in tears because we can’t think of anything else to do.  That’s when God picks us up and loves us and forgives us, even though some of our mess gets all over Him.

But just because we might mess up, we can’t stop trying to “make pancakes” for God or for others.  Sooner or later we’ll get it right, and then they’ll be glad we tried.

To Kill a Wolf

Radio personality Paul Harvey tells the story of how an Eskimo kills a wolf.  The account is grisly, yet it offers fresh insight into the consuming, self-destructive nature of sin.

First, the Eskimo coats his knife blade with animal blood and allows it to freeze.  Then he adds another layer of blood, and another, until the blade is completely concealed by frozen blood.

Next, the hunter fixes his knife in the ground with the blade up.  When a wolf follows his sensitive nose to the source of the scent and discovers the bait, he licks it, tasting the fresh frozen blood.  He begins to lick faster, more and more vigorously, lapping the blade until the keen edge is bare.  Feverishly now, harder and harder the wolf licks the blade in the Arctic night.  So great becomes his craving for blood that the wolf does not notice the razor-sharp sting of the naked blade on his own tongue, nor does he recognize the instant at which his insatiable thirst is being satisfied by his OWN warm blood.  His carnivorous appetite just craves more—until the dawn finds him dead in the snow!

It is a fearful thing that people can be consumed by their own lusts.  Only God’s grace keeps us from the wolf’s fate.
