Word of the Week: “Self-Love”

            “Love the Lord your God… and love your neighbor as you love yourself.” (Luke 10:27)  Jesus often taught about the importance of self-esteem and self-love, but counseled against loving ONLY oneself.  It’s nearly impossible to live unselfishly without loving oneself…

Easter is the Ladder of Life

Sometime ago I read about an island north of Scotland where there was a rock quarry beside a steep cliff.  The workmen would descend into the quarry by means of a ladder hung over the side of the cliff.  Late one afternoon a sudden storm came up forcing the men to clamber up the ladder to safety, but in their haste they left the ladder dangling over the cliff.

                        Later that night, as the storm grew in its intensity, a ship was driven close to the island by the violent waves, and was in danger of being dashed upon the rocks and the crew being drowned.  The wind and the pounding waves took their toll, and the ship began filling with water.  The men took to the rigging to delay the inevitable, but they knew they were doomed to be pounded by the waves upon the rocks.  Then, suddenly, just as they were about to be thrown upon the rocks, they saw the ladder which seemed to have been place there just for them.  They hastily climbed up the ladder and reached the top in safety, while the ship was dashed to pieces on the rocks below.

The Easter hope is our ladder of safety, our ladder of life.  Christ has paid the price of our sin by His death upon the cross of Calvary.  But, death could not hold Him, and He rose up triumphant over sin and death, and because He lives, we, too, shall live.  The ladder of life is our ladder to life.

      Subtle Differences

After a while you learn the subtle difference

   between holding a hand and chaining a soul;

And you learn that love doesn't mean leaning

   and company doesn't mean security;

And you begin to learn that kisses aren't contracts

   and presents aren't promises;

And you begin to accept your defeats

   with your head up and your eyes open,

   with the grace of an adult,

   not the grief of a child;

And you willingly reach out a helping hand

   realizing that you are being helped even more;

And you learn to build all your roads on today

   because tomorrow's ground is too uncertain for plans.

After a while you learn that even

   sunshine burns if you get too much.

So you plant your own garden

   and decorate your own soul,

   instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers.

And you learn that you really can endure...

   that you really are strong,

And you really do have worth.

Welcome to worship!

            The book of James tells us that “‘Abraham believed God’... and he was called the friend of God” (James 2:23). It is our desire that all of us know friendship with God.  Let our friendship become a reality here and now.  Not only friendship with God but with one another. “Blest be the tie that binds…” __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
