CHORAL INTROIT

RESPONSIVE CALL TO WORSHIP

L:   God calls us in the quiet aftermath of the Christmas excitement to become new,

P:   to make room in our own nativity, even where there is no room at the inn.

L:   Where we are busy—                             P:   PEACE.

L:   Where we are lost—                               P:   SALVATION.

L:   Where we are sad—                                         P:   JOY.

L:   Where we are bitter—                             P:   LOVE.

All: Let our prayers reflect the hope for all these gifts of God.

*OPENING HYMN   “Angels from the Realms of Glory”       Hymn #149

*GATHERING PRAYER (in unison)

After the noise and glitter and the ho-ho-ho of the world’s Christmas, we have come away, O God, into this hour in your presence.  Help us to discover here the true meaning and joy that lie beneath the surface of the holidays.  Help us to see beyond the Baby in the manger to the man Jesus became, to test our lives by His teachings and example.  Enable us to see beyond the human Jesus to your own incredible love reaching out to us through Him, giving wisdom and power for the journeys of our lives.  Then send us out to spread the news that you are born among us.  We pray through Jesus Christ, who taught us to pray, saying...

*LORD’S PRAYER (using “debts”)

The Ironies of Christmas   (Kenneth Morse, In Straw and Story)

He was the Son of God.

   He was a human being.

He came down from heaven.

He was born in a stable.

Kings came to his cradle.

His first home was a cave.

He was born to be king.

He was the child of the peasant, Mary.

He was the greatest among leaders.

He was the least among servants.

He was loved and honored,

   He was rejected and despised.

He was gentle and loving.

   He made many enemies.

He counseled perfection.

He was the friend of sinners.

He was a joyful companion.

He was a man of sorrows.

He said, “Rejoice!”

   He said, “Repent!”

He said, “Love God with all your heart.”

He said, “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

He said, “Don’t be anxious.”

   He said, “Count the cost.”

He said, “Deny yourself.”

   He said, “Ask and receive.”

In Him was life.

   He died on a cross.

He was a historic person.

   He lives today.

He was Jesus of Nazareth.

   He is Christ the Lord.

“With humans, many things are impossible…

but all things are possible with God.

Matthew 19:26
