*OPENING HYMN          “All My Hope on God Is Founded”   Hymn #88

*GATHERING PRAYER (in unison)

Giver of all good gifts, we thank you for your presence deeply embedded in our lives, and for entering our lives fully in your human face of Jesus Christ.  You know our uneasiness with the claims that faith makes upon our lives, yet you linger with us in our struggle and we know we are not alone.  We are thankful that you have not abandoned us and that your Spirit continues to comfort us in our search for truth.  Encourage us to live the truth we find and guide us to seek the truth yet undiscovered.  We are thankful for the bonds of love and faith, which connect us with other seekers around us and with you, as we live in this family of faith.  We pray together, as Jesus taught us, saying: “Our Father…”

*LORD’S PRAYER (using “debts”)

Don’t Ever     (Laine Parsons)

Don’t ever try to understand everything -
Some things will just never make sense.

Don’t ever be reluctant to show your feelings -
When you’re happy, give into it!
When you’re not, live with it.

Don’t ever be afraid to try to make things better -
You might be surprised at the results.

Don’t ever take the weight of the world on your shoulders.

Don’t ever feel threatened by the future -
Take one day at a time.

Don’t ever feel guilty about the past- what’s done is done.
Learn from mistakes you might have made.

Don’t ever feel that you are alone...
There is always somebody there for you to reach out to.

Don’t ever forget that you can achieve so many of the things you can imagine -
Imagine that!
It’s not as hard as it seems.

Don’t ever stop loving
Don’t ever stop believing
Don’t ever stop dreaming your dreams.

 Can Anybody Hear Me?

A man climbs to the top of the snow covered mountain, wondering, “Can God really hear me from here?”  So he yells: “God, what should I do with my life?”
“Feed the hungry, strive for justice, work for peace,” says a big voice from somewhere.
“Oh,” said the man. “I was just testing.”
“I know,” said the voice. “So was I.”

Tempted to Play God

Both Adam and Jesus were tempted by the chance to play God.  Whereas Adam stepped over a line and found humanity a curse, Jesus stayed behind the line and made humanity a blessing.  One tried to be God; one was content to be a human being.  The irony is that the one who tried to be God did not do too well as a human being, while the one who was content to be human became known as the Son of God.

The Decoy

The February 26,1974 edition of Insight told the story of Major William Martin, a British subject who is buried near Huelvo on the southern coast of Spain.   Martin never knew the great contribution he made to the Allied success in the Second World War, especially in Sicily, because he died of pneumonia in the foggy dampness of England before he ever saw the battlefront.

The Allies had invaded North Africa.  The next logical step was Sicily.  Knowing the Germans calculated this, the Allies determined to outfox them.  One dark night, an Allied submarine came to the surface just off the coast of Spain and put Martin’s body out to sea in a rubber raft with an oar.   In his pocket were secret documents indicating the Allied forces would strike next in Greece and Sardinia.

Major Martin’s body washed ashore, and Axis intelligence operatives soon found him, thinking he had crashed at sea.  They passed the secret documents through Axis hands all the way to Hitler’s headquarters.  So while Allied forces moved toward Sicily, thousands and thousands of German troops moved on to Greece and Sardinia where the battle wasn’t.

Satan works with more cunning than even the Allied plan, getting us to fight many temptations in places where the real battle isn’t.  Often, temptations hurt far most where we least expect them.

Announcements

Welcome to all!

The Bible says: “Draw near to God and God will draw near to you” (James 4:8). May all barriers between God and ourselves be removed.  Let us open our spirits to the Spirit of God and discover the power and peace of God surging within us. Blessings on all! ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Pledge Cards

Do you know where your pledge card is?  Your commitment to the financial health of our church is essential—please turn in a card indicating your giving for 2010 in the offering plate or to the church office. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Fund-raiser at Fishing Derby

The youth will be selling “hot stuff” (hot coffee, hot chocolate and hot dogs) near the Center Harbor docks during the Rotary Fishing Derby Jan 30th and 31st.  This is the first time we have tried this, and we need lots of help—here at the church, down at the docks and transporting.  Please lend a hand, even for an hour or two. The details are being worked out; sign up in Gilpatric Hall and we will contact you with specific info. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Blood Drive

We will again sponsor the Red Cross Blood Drive on Friday, February 5th from 1-6 PM.  CHCC has earned the reputation of offering the BEST “goodies” to those who donate blood; we need your help to uphold our reputation.  Again appointments will be made from 1 to 4 to donate blood; walk-ins are welcome from 4 to 6. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Souper Bowl—a small way to make a big difference

Twenty years ago, a youth group in NC realized that much food was enjoyed by those watching the Super Bowl game… yet MANY people didn’t have even a bowl of soup to eat.  These youth have continued to challenge churches all over the country to give one food item and one dollar on Super Bowl Sunday (February 7th) to be given to a local food pantry. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Help with newsletter

Volunteers are needed Thursday, January 28th at 1:00 PM to help collate the newsletter.

Christmas Fund

THE CHRISTMAS FUND benefits those who have served the church as professional leaders. This offering provides bonus checks at Christmas-time, emergency grants for crises faced by low-income clergy and widowed spouses, and supplements small pensions and health-plan costs for clergy in need; church leaders with no expectations of growth in earning power are able to cope, with your help.  Our January mission is THE CHRISTMAS FUND.  Please say “thank you” to those professional leaders who have served us well in the past and share some of your blessings by contributing generously to the CHRISTMAS FUND.  God is still speaking (through you!)

Disaster Relief

Money from the interdenominational offering One Great Hour of Sharing has already been sent to Haiti in the wake of the destructive earthquake there.  You may add to disaster relief funds by noting “OGHS Haiti Disaster” on your check made out to CHCC.
