IN THE LIFE OF THE CHURCH (announcements)

PREPARING THE WAY

Entering into Worship

CHORAL INTROIT

RESPONSIVE CALL TO WORSHIP (from Jer. 17 and 18)

L: Let us praise God, who gives living water, through whom all the faithful flourish.

P: Like trees planted by the water, God, are those who trust in You.

L: Like trees with deep roots are those who place their faith in You.

P: Like green trees in winter are those who receive their life from You.

L: Like clay in the hands of the potter, we are works of Your hands, O God.

P: We praise You, God, for life that has no end, through Jesus our Lord.

*OPENING HYMN        “Sing Praise to God Who Reigns Above” Hymn #6

*GATHERING PRAYER (in unison)

God of grace, we come once again to make a joyful noise to you.  But beyond these walls there are other noises, ugly noises: the roar of engines that pollute our air; the laments of old people just waiting to die; the whimper of children, unwanted and unattended.

Accept, we pray, the joyful noise of praise which we offer to you with thanksgiving within these walls.  At the same time, help us to stop the ugly noises, and show us how to build a gentler, fairer world, in which not just we, but all your children everywhere, will want to make a joyful noise to you.  We pray in the name of Jesus, whose life was a song of praise.  He taught us to pray together, saying: “Our Father…”

*LORD’S PRAYER (using “debts”)

*GLORIA PATRI    (sung by the people)    #35

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost,

As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be,

                     World without end.   Amen.  Amen.

I am… therefore…    (Charlotte D. Nichols)

I am loved and affirmed by God—

Therefore, I am able to love and affirm others.

I am forgiven by God and accepted unconditionally—just as I am—

Therefore, I am able to forgive and accept others unconditionally—just as they are.

I am nourished by the Bread of Life—

Therefore, I am committed to building communities where people are nourished,

            physically and spiritually.

I am one for whom Christ suffered and died—

Therefore, I am willing to accept the suffering in my life

that God may turn into blessing for me and for others.

I am led through the dark times in my life by the light of God’s love—

Therefore, I am a channel for God’s healing love for others.

I am strengthened by the faith and fellowship of those who have known God’s love—

Therefore, I reach out to share that faith and fellowship.

I am renewed by the peace and stillness of prayer—

Therefore, I pray that others may know God’s peace.

I am blessed a thousand times over by the abundance of life in Christ—

Therefore, I seek to share that abundance with others.

I am filled with joy and thanksgiving—

Therefore, I want the whole world to join me in song and dance and celebration.

The Key to Life    (Actor Hume Cronyn)

I don’t understand life, but I think the key, if not the answer, to it is thanksgiving and praise.  We can’t figure it out, any of us, but if we embrace the mystery, it can be quite wonderful.

Transforming Praise  (Willa Mae Whitney)

PRAISE when your way becomes dreary

     And your feet seem too tired to go on;

PRAISE when there’s no light before you

Through darkness that comes before dawn.

PRAISE when your heart becomes saddened

     With grief earthly friends can’t allay;

PRAISE through the harsh, bitter feelings

Brought on by some hurt of the day.

Look not at the wearisome problems

That taunt you and cause you to fret.

Your God is beyond and above them—

Through PRAISE all your doubts you’ll forget.

God gives you His strength in your weakness,

     He lifts and empowers your feet;

Your God is the Light in your darkness,

He makes all your journey complete.

Let PRAISE be your answer in trouble,

Let PRAISE fill your life with His song,

For no sweeter music can thrill us

Than praising our God all day long.

God’s arms lift your spirit through heartaches,

His joy will reflect in your face.

God changes your life as you PRAISE Him,

     Transformed by His infinite grace.

Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.  There is one body and one Spirit - just as you were called to one hope when you were called.

There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of us all.

Ephesians 4:3-5

Today is Souper Bowl Sunday

Twenty years ago, a youth group in NC realized that much food was enjoyed by those watching the Super Bowl game… yet MANY people didn’t have even a bowl of soup to eat.  These youth have continued to challenge members in churches all over the country to give one food item for the local food pantry and one dollar on Super Bowl Sunday to be given to the Soup Kitchen.

Center Harbor Soup Kitchen First Anniversary

On Tuesday, the CH Soup Kitchen will celebrate its first anniversary.  This yummy and important ministry serves great meals and lots of wonderful fellowship, as well as an opportunity to serve.  The Soup Kitchen has grown in many ways since it served the first meal to six guests.  You are invited to dine in Gilpatric Hall on Tuesday at 5:30 PM.

Mardi Gras Celebration

The days before the Lenten season are traditionally a time for fun—before the somber forty days of preparation before Easter.  Celebrations around the world mark the colorful Mardi Gras carnival days.  (Mardi Gras means “fat Tuesday” and is the day before Ash Wednesday; it is the last day to use up all the butter, eggs, sausage, sugar and cream before Lent).

You are all invited to celebrate Mardi Gras on Sunday, February 14th after Worship in Gilpatric Hall.

There will be some special crafts, some singing, a parade with appropriate accompaniment from a well-rehearsed kazoo band, banners to make, light lunch of pancakes and sausages and YOU and your whole family!  Let’s have fun together before we begin our Lenten journey.

Please sign up in Gilpatric Hall and take blank mask(s) home to decorate.

Ash Wednesday

You are invited to begin a Lenten journey on Ash Wednesday, February 17th at 7:00 PM.  Come to burn up your failures and transform them with God’s help.
