CHORAL INTROIT

RESPONSIVE CALL TO WORSHIP

L: Though the mountains may shake,

P: We are standing on holy ground.

L: Though the earth moves under our feet,

P: Christ alone is our solid rock.

L: Though the walls may crack,

P: Our refuge is in the everlasting love of God.

L: Though structures may come tumbling down,

P: God is our stronghold.

L: Though fear may seek to set up camp,

P: God is our strength and our guide.

*OPENING HYMN            “We Gather Together”                             Hymn #276

*GATHERING PRAYER (in unison)

Holy Spirit of God, pour upon us your gift of guidance.  We live in this day, which specializes in confusion.  We live in this time when your Spirit sounds suspect to rational minds.  Confirm in us your courage for faith in this suspicious age.  We are your church!  Guide us with your renewing Spirit!  Give us the heart to awaken to your wonders and the faith to welcome your signs of hope around us.  God's Spirit is ever with us and in us; we affirm this by the prayer that Jesus taught us, saying "Our Father..."

*LORD’S PRAYER (using “debts”)

“Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom and the power  and the glory forever.  Amen.”

CHILDREN’S STORY   “We Are the Church Together”

(the children will leave to go to their Church School classes)

Walking Advertisements

You are a walking advertisement of your church and the Christ whom it proclaims.  You take the church out of its four walls, and make it live in the everyday affairs of life.  In fact, what people think of your church, they think of you.

Some have the idea that the pastor is the church.  It is true that the pastor often speaks for the church, declares what it stands for, and invites people into its fellowship.  It is the pastor's job to know the church's business and to act on its behalf.  The pastor is your representative, but certainly not your substitute.

The preaching in the pulpit is fruitless unless it is reflected in the lives of members of the congregation.  Classroom teaching is ineffective unless it comes to life in the attitude and behavior of people.  Your church is measured not so much by what its leaders say as by what you do.  You are the means by which the good life advocated by the church is communicated to people.

Your church professes a concern for people; you express that concern in the way you act toward others.  Your church tries to build up a Christian world; you validate these attempts by your community.  Your church claims to have a gospel that will make people new, opening to them a fuller life; you are demonstration of that claim.

Your daily acts as a Christian preach more sermons, teach more people, and save more lives than the words that are spoken inside the four walls of your church building.  You are a cell of the living church.  Without you, the church has no life.

Put Into Perspective

Some people ask, “Can I be a Christian without being part of a church?”  The answer is YES.  But let’s put that question into perspective.  Being a Christian without serving in the church is something like:

A student who will not go to school.

A soldier who will not join the army.

A citizen who does not vote or pay taxes.

            A salesman with no customers.

An explorer with no base camp.

A seaman on a ship without a crew.

A businessperson on a desert island.

            An author without readers.

A tuba player without a band.

A parent without a family.

A football player without a team.

A politician who refuses to meet people.

A scientist who refuses to share his findings with others.

Together, We Become….

I am only a spark; together we can be a fire.
I am only a strong; together we can be a lyre.

I am only a drop; together we can be a fountain.

I am only an anthill; together we can be a mountain.

I am only a feather; together we can be a wing.
I am only a serf; together we can serve the King.
I am only a link; together we can be a chain.
I am only a sprinkle; together we can be a rain.

Harmony

When Charles V stepped down as the Holy Roman Emperor some 400 years ago, he spent much of his time at his palace in Spain.  He had six clocks there, and no matter how he tried, he could never get them to chime together on the hour.

In his memoirs, he wrote, "How is it possible for six different clocks to chime all at the same time?  How is it even more impossible for the six nations of the Holy Roman Empire to live in harmony?  It can't be done. It's impossible, even if they call themselves Christians."

Today, we know it's possible to have clocks in perfect harmony, when all are powered by the same source and all are calibrated to the same standard-- Greenwich Mean Time.  Likewise, unity in the church is possible, but only when all are calibrated to one standard-- Christ.

What is the beloved community of God?

It is a community where no one is left out, where the world is indeed our parish, where the deepest hopes and yearnings and cries are heard, where we rejoice in every sign of God's kingdom; in the upholding of human dignity and community; in every expression of love, justice and reconciliation; in each act of self-giving on behalf of others; in the abundance of God's gifts entrusted to us that all may have enough. Glory to God!

Announcements – October 30, 2011

Welcome

Welcome to this service of worship.  In the spirit of the psalmist who said, “I will sing and make melody to the Lord” (Psalm 27:6), let us join together in song and prayer and waiting upon the Lord that we may be refreshed in the Spirit and encouraged for the week ahead.

Call to Annual Meeting  -  IMPORTANT MEETING—Sunday, October 30, 2011  immediately following worship with pot luck luncheon.  ALL are invited (only members may vote).  Childcare will be available.  We will hear reports and vote on leadership and the budget for the coming year. Holly Fair and Crafts – November 19 – Saturday – 8:00am – 3:00pm

As always, this year’s Holly Fair will feature hand-made crafts (made by members and friends), decorated tabletop trees, wood crafts, and stitched items.  Traditional Holly Fair favorites will be made by the congregation’s baking elves:  home-made baked goods, jams/jellies, and a cookie walk.  There will also be gift baskets and a special corner with craft  supplies.  A morning coffee break will be served upstairs, and a luncheon served downstairs.  Again this year will be “Trifles and Treasures,” which will be headed up by Rose Marie Phillips and Sally Humer. If you or your family would like to help with this fundraiser…call Sally Humer 253-4882 or office 253-7698.
