RESPONSIVE CALL TO WORSHIP
L: Let silent tongues find a new voice,
P: Let words arise from a deep place,
L: For our God is an awesome God,
P: … who sees the poor and forgotten,
L: … who notices the homeless and cares for the hungry,
P: … and who aches at the harm done to one another and to the earth.
L: Let us speak out for justice,
P: … keeping the flame of compassion burning.
L: Let us sing out a hopeful song,
P: … and make our deeds match our chorus.
L: Let our voices soar in praise,
P: … singing in the midst of troubles, singing because we trust God’s spirit.

*GATHERING PRAYER (in unison)
O God of grace, who gave us Jesus Christ to be our Savior; we implore you to overcome our darkness with His light, our selfishness with His love, our idleness and cowardice with His steadfast devotion, that we may ever live as in your presence, and perform faithfully our appointed tasks, and finally come to everlasting life; through the same Jesus Christ who taught us to pray saying, “Our Father…”
*LORD’S PRAYER (using “debts”)
“Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.”

The Christmas Fund
The Christmas Fund (formerly known as the Veterans of the Cross and the Emergency Fund) is administered by the Pension Boards on behalf of the United Church Of Christ to retired clergy and lay employees who may need assistance for unseen financial crises or other needs. Although it is after the holiday season, our church is concerned about those who have served the church, and we want to support this effort.

A Litany (Adapted from “A Tough Mind and a Tender Heart" a sermon reprinted in Martin Luther King, Jr., The Strength to Love (
All: At times we need to know that the Lord is a God of justice.
L: When slumbering giants of injustice emerge in the earth,
P: … we need to know that there is a God of power who can cut them down like the grass and leave them withered like the green herb.
L: When our most tireless efforts fail to stop the sweep of oppression,
P: … we need to know that in this universe is a God whose matchless strength is a fit contrast to the sordid weakness of humans.
All: But there are also times when we need to know that God possesses love and mercy.
L: When we are staggered by the chilly winds of adversity and battered by the raging storms of disappointment and when through our folly and sin we stray into some destructive far country and are frustrated because of a strange feeling of homesickness,
P: … we need to know that there is Someone who cares for us, understands us, and will give us another chance.
All: There are still other times when we need to know that God freely offers to us visions and dreams that are far beyond our comprehension and understanding.
L: When the future looks dim and the possibilities seem to narrow,
P: … we need to know that God intends to open our lives to God’s spirit and direction.
L: When days grow dark and nights grow dreary,
P: … we can be thankful that our God's nature combines a creative synthesis of love and justice and imagination which will lead us through life's dark valleys and into the sunlit pathways of hope and fulfillment.
What the Devil Wants from You
Edward M. Hayes, in his book Twelve and One Half Keys, tells about a young teenager who encounters the devil. The teen doesn't really believe the blond-haired man dressed in black is the devil, but he plays along. “You want my soul?” The devil says he's not interested.
“If not my soul ... then what? Do you want to buy my car?”
“I do not want to buy second-hand souls or second-hand cars,” replied the devil. “My business is dreams. What I want to buy from you is your dream.”
When the teen questioned the devil further, he replied, “Because, my young friend, if I were to obtain your soul, I would have just a soul, but if I am able to purchase—at a fair price, of course—your dream, then I have changed the course of history! Your soul affects only you, but your dream—ah, that's something different. Your dream touches the lives of countless people and, who knows, maybe people yet to be born. The effect of your dream is cosmic, and that's why I'm interested in it.”
The Dream (Martin Luther King, Jr. AFL-CIO Convention, December 1961)
I look forward confidentially to the day when all who work for a living will be one with no thought of their separateness as Negroes, Jews, Italians or any other distinctions.
This will be the day when we bring into full realization the American dream—a dream yet unfulfilled.
A dream of equality of opportunity, of privilege and property widely distributed;
A dream of a land where [people] will not take necessities from the many to give luxuries to the few;
A dream of a land where [people] will not argue that the color of a [person’s] skin determines the content of his/her character;
A dream of a nation where all our gifts and resources are held not for ourselves alone, but as instruments of service for the rest of humanity;
The dream of a country where every [individual] will respect the dignity of the human personality.
This is the dream!
To Help You Dream
1. What will make me happy?
2. What messages from my childhood keep me from thinking big?
3. How do other people's opinions and prejudices keep me from dreaming my own dreams?
4. Do I spend too much of my time with negative people?
5. Do I think negative thoughts more often than positive thoughts?
6. Am I giving myself a chance in new arenas? What have I never tried that I might enjoy?
7. What am I doing today to expand my horizons?
8. Am I questioning the "givens" of my life?
9. Do I have a mental image of what I'd like to be?
10. How would I live my life if I knew I could not fail?
11. Do I keep having a “crazy idea” that won’t go away?
12. How would I want to change the world (or at least MY section of the world)?
